I've got a question(s): how does one go about registering a domain name? And what is the deal with all the .com/.org/.net/.com.au etc. hoohaa?
I'm also figuring paying for the name and paying for server space are two separate things, is this also true?
I'm thinking of starting a website to keep track of my many international business concerns and ingoings and outgoings, so I'm thinking www.heathledger.com, that shouldn't be a problem should it?

you can register a .com/.org/.net domain through many american companies. Go Daddy seem to provide a good service and recently won the 2003 Registrar User's Choice (for what that's worth).. for american domain names, anything over $US10 per year is a rip-off.
australian domain names are a different story, you can see from the Melbourne IT website that .com.au domains cost around $AU70 a year, so you would have to be pretty keen on a .com.au to justify the cost.

this is true. there is a bit of info about server space on the about page.

a good place to check domain names is at Who Is. although heathledger.com is taken you could still get heathledger.biz which might fit in with your international business concerns.
